AT&T’s “creation” myth: Is the message helping or hurting?

AT&T’s proposed acquisition of T-Mobile USA was a shocker when it was announced. But let’s be clear: Companies do have a right to acquire and restructure other companies unless there’s a substantial and direct anti-competitive impact on a clearly identifiable market. It’s all part of the free flow of capital in our system.

So when the Justice Department brought out the heavy artillery and accused the AT&T/T-Mobile deal of being the rare case of a blatantly anti-competitive merger, you’d think that AT&T would argue back that it isn’t that bad of a combination. But that’s not what AT&T is arguing – not really.
